Food poverty in the UK
This meeting gave members an opportunity to discuss food poverty and access to healthy food in the UK. Food price inflation began to slow down in late 2012, with prices increasing at approximately 2% a year according to the Consumer Prices Index, but poor harvests and rising populations are forecast to push global food prices up again. Professor Martin Caraher of City University, London and Sion Roberts of the European Food & Farming Partnerships (EFFP) spoke about food poverty and the findings of the Food Affordability Barometer developed by the EFFP in conjunction with Wm Morrison Supermarkets. Lindsay Boswell, the Chief Executive of Fareshare, spoke about the work being done by the charity to tackle food poverty and reduce food waste.
