At our last meeting of the year, members discussed the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA’s) scientific opinion on aspartame, published that morning. EFSA’s main conclusion is that aspartame and its breakdown products are safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure. EFSA’s experts believe the current Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 40mg/kg bw/day is protective for the general population. The guest speakers were George Kass of the of the Food Ingredients and Packaging Unit at EFSA and Jim Macdonald of the UK Aspartame Awareness Campaign.
