Food and Hydration Standards in Hospitals, Prisons and Young Offender Institutes

At the Forum’s last meeting before the Parliamentary summer recess, Andy Jones, the immediate past Chair of the Hospital Caterers Association, spoke about the extent to which the recommendations of the Hospital Food Standards Panel on food and hydration standards have been acted upon, so that patients, staff and visitors can eat healthily in our hospitals. Owen Sidaway, Head of Catering Services for the National Offender Management Services, then spoke about food standards in Young Offender Institutes and prisons; and Dr Bernard Gesch FRSA, visiting Senior Scientist at the University of Oxford, spoke about research in the USA, Holland and the UK which looked at the impact on offenders’ behaviour, including self-harm of improving their nutritional intake by using food supplements.
